Hey BigIron
I just watched your video about the baffle. As you know I work in a sheet metal shop so I have sheet metal to experiement with. My Chargriller is set up almost identical to yours except I have 3 thermometers on mine. I placed thermometers 2 1/2″ from each side of the handle so I could get a good reading completely across the grates, then I have the factory one. My first attempt was shearing one to the exact width of one grate. At that length I would get a temperature flux of 25 degrees from one end of the smoker to the other. and close to 50 degrees different from the factory from the thermometer from the far side of the grill. I also tried increasing the lengths, notched one side and put a 45 degree break to angle the heat down thinking it would force the heat to move clear across the grill. That method helped but still I could not get my thermometers to balance out. What I ended up with is a straight piece of 12 ga stainless 18 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ no bends and no breaks. The piece of stainless actually runs past the thermometer closest to the fire box by about 3/4″. My stainless steel plate originally was 13″ long but it made one side of the grill about 15 degrees different so I sheared 1/2″ off. Now I get a balanced temperature on both sides and it’s actually pretty close on the cheapo factory gauge. I got a pile of scrap sheet metal figuring out the best way to make one, but it was well worth the effort, I figure climate differences would make the outcome a bit different but in the Yankee states it seems to be the right size. I hope this may help some of your website followers.
PS….Funny thing is this morning I painted my firebox too!!!
