Happy Memorial Day everybody......Yes I did some BBQ but this seemed more important....
Anhydrous ammonia and propane cylinders
I wanted to let you all know about one thing that I was not aware of.
Meth cooks are getting the propane tanks from the exchanges at Wal-Mart, Kroger, etc. and emptying them of the propane.
Then, they are filling them with anhydrous ammonia (which they now have a recipe for by the way). After they are finished with them, they return them to the store. They are then refilled with propane and sent back for you and me to buy.
Anhydrous ammonia is very corrosive and weakens the structure of the tank. It can be very dangerous when mixed with propane and hooked up to our grills, etc.
You should inspect the propane tank for any blue or greenish residue around the valve areas.
If it is present, refuse to purchase that one.
The full story is at SNOPES – http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/methtank.asp
I hope you all have a happy and SAFE Memorial Day.

Thank you for this very important warning!
I guess this is just a good reason to make use of refill stations rather than exchanges when possible.
Just wanted to let you know, I started reading your blog last week. I have done quite a bit of grilling over the past several years, but not yet done any smoking. I just picked myself up a Chargriller gasser, with the optional charcoal side fire box, so I’m finally set up to get some smoking done.
I’ll be firing her up in about 3 hours (6am) and smoking a pork shoulder all day. Just discovered a great little butcher shop, and the prices are pretty tough to beat anywhere else I’ve looked around here. I got a 7.5lbs shoulder (with bone) for about $18. I’m looking forward to some good eating later tonight!
Thanks for all the tips and recipes that you’ve been sharing here, I’ve bookmarked the site, and check back frequently to see if you’ve added anything.
Hi Will
If you watch BigIron’s videos and read his receipes you will learn a lot about smoking. I have been coming to this site almost every day for quite some time, it is by far the best site for backyard smokers. BigIron is a great guy and he wont ever steer you wrong. Good luck on your shoulder………
Thanks Dave…
as it turns out, when everyone says that Pork Shoulders are the easiest piece of meat to start out with when smoking, they are absolutely telling the truth..
After being on the smoker for twelve and a half hours, and resting for an hour, it looked (and tasted) mighty good:
